Can Filling Line: Filling, Seaming and Packaging Scope
A beverage can filling line must match the drink, the can body and end, and the required finished-pack output. Define filling and seaming as a coordinated system, with product preparation, can handling, inspection and packing clearly included or excluded.

Select the process for the actual beverage
Start with a product specification, not only the can volume. Still beverages, carbonated soft drinks, beer and products requiring a defined thermal process can have different filling conditions and quality controls. A can filler demonstrated with water is not evidence that it will handle a foaming or carbonated recipe at the same output.
| Product requirement | Configuration question | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Carbonated beverage | How are product temperature, carbonation and pressure controlled through filling and closing? | A trial with the agreed beverage and package, with fill and carbonation results at a defined sampling point. |
| Still beverage | Which filling principle and closing conditions suit the product and can? | Product-contact and filling configuration, package handling and the required process controls. |
| Oxygen-sensitive product | Which operations and measurements address the specified oxygen limit? | Defined measurement method and boundary, including transfer, filling and closing where relevant. |
| Thermally processed product | Where does the validated treatment occur and can the complete package tolerate it? | Product-process and package approval; any heater, cooler or tunnel listed in the equipment scope. |
Product preservation and shelf life depend on the validated product, package and production process. They cannot be inferred from a filler type or a machine photograph.
Approve the can body and end as one format
Standard, slim and sleek are useful package descriptions, but they do not replace dimensional drawings. Two cans with the same nominal volume may need different handling parts or seamer tooling. Record the can and end supplier, drawing revision, material and approved sample set before finalizing change parts.
| Format information | Why it changes the quotation |
|---|---|
| Can body diameter, height and profile | Affects conveying, guides, infeed transfer, filling support and pack formation. |
| End specification and supplier reference | Determines the required end feed and matched chuck/roll tooling, subject to seamer review. |
| Beverage and filling conditions | Affects the filling configuration and package/process suitability. |
| Launch and future formats | Each needs a stated status: included and tested, separately priced, or outside the approved range. |
| Pack pattern and presentation | Determines cans per pack, tray/carton/film scope, coding position and downstream handling. |
Ask for a format-by-format change-parts list and a demonstrated change between two agreed formats. Confirm what is adjusted, what is replaced and how settings and tooling identification are handed over.
Balance cans, beverage flow and finished packs
Use cans per minute for container handling and liters per hour for product preparation. For illustration, 120 accepted cans per minute at 330 mL equals 7,200 cans per hour and 2,376 liters of saleable beverage per hour. In a 24-can pack, that equals 300 complete packs per hour, or 5 packs per minute. These are arithmetic requirements, not a quoted machine capacity.
The mixer, chiller and product supply must also account for their operating conditions and defined losses. The packer must match the actual pack pattern, recovery after short stops and rejected cans. A filler maximum speed alone does not establish sustained finished-line output.
- State accepted cans per minute for each product and can, with trial duration and quality criteria.
- Define the operating time and loss assumptions once; do not subtract the same stop or reject allowance twice.
- Check conveyor accumulation, end replenishment, coding, reject handling and packer restart as part of the line balance.
- Separate machine-level speed tests from a coordinated line test using the agreed production materials.
Make seam inspection part of acceptance
A neat-looking seam is not sufficient evidence of a correctly formed double seam. Agree the inspection procedure and acceptance limits with the can/end and seamer suppliers for the approved package. Specify external checks, seam measurements and teardown checks as applicable, along with the instruments, sample identification and record format.
- Document the approved can/end combination and tooling before the test.
- Record filling conditions, operating rate and the seaming station associated with inspected samples.
- Include inspection after a format change, controlled stop and restart under the agreed procedure.
- Define handling of nonconforming cans, reinspection and release of subsequent production.
- Demonstrate end-feed faults, reject confirmation and the agreed operator inspection tasks without bypassing guards.
The handover should include tooling references, inspection instructions, maintenance requirements and the agreed spare parts. Seam dimensions and adjustment procedures must come from the approved package and equipment documentation.
Separate the filler-seamer from the complete line
Request an itemized quotation for can depalletizing or manual loading, rinsing or other specified can preparation, product supply, filler-seamer, inspection, coding, conveyors and final packing. Mark CO2 supply, cooling, compressed air, electrical distribution and installation at their connection boundaries.
For an expansion, identify who owns the control interface between new machines and existing conveyors or packers. Resolve the end-supply method, rejected-can collection and maintenance access on the layout before shipment.
Frequently asked questions
Can one can filling line run still and carbonated beverages?
Only when the proposed filling configuration, product process and closing arrangement explicitly support both. Require product-specific operating conditions and acceptance trials; a shared can size does not prove compatibility.
Does changing can volume require a new seamer?
Not always. The answer depends on the body and end specifications and the approved range of the equipment. Request a tooling and handling-parts assessment for each format.
Is a filler-seamer quotation a complete canning line?
Only if the quotation also defines the agreed upstream preparation, can supply, utilities, inspection, conveying, packing and installation scope. Compare the itemized boundary.
