Beverage Date Code Readability: Surface and Verification Checks
Investigate beverage date-code problems by correct content, substrate condition, consumable suitability and readability after packing.
What to establish first
Define the required code content and readability assessment before investigating a faint or misplaced mark. Review the marking surface, presentation and selected coding technology, then confirm that inspection sees the intended data.
Three checks before a change
- Retain samples with code time, substrate, surface condition and material lot. Compare legibility immediately and after the agreed handling or conditioning.
- Review encoder or print trigger, presentation and approved setup with the supplier. Inspect and maintain the equipment through the applicable procedure.
- Check the code recipe, data source and vision verification together. Verify both readable good codes and agreed challenge cases, including missing or wrong content.
Interpret the observed pattern
| Observed pattern | Next review |
|---|---|
| Print is clear but content is wrong | Check the approved product/batch/date logic and contain the affected scope. Readability cannot convert incorrect information into acceptable coding. |
| Code degrades on a wet surface | Compare the actual surface at the print point with the approved substrate/consumable basis. A drier upstream bottle does not prove the print surface is suitable. |
| Code fails after packing or handling | Retain samples from both stages and use the agreed durability/readability method. Define where and when acceptance must be checked for this package. |
Evidence to record
Use these fields as a worksheet. Keep individual results and comparison samples; an overall average alone may hide the affected condition.
| Record item | Required evidence |
|---|---|
| Required code content and source | Identify the exact format, lot and document revision; attach a representative sample or record. |
| Substrate and surface condition | State the location, method, instrument and operating condition so a comparison can be repeated. |
| Trigger and setup revision | Link the observation to an individual sample and a common timestamp; retain both normal and affected cases. |
| Readability and wrong-code challenges | Record the approved assessment, action, verification result and responsible person; keep unresolved items visible. |
Controlled trial and acceptance
Agree the observation, affected boundary and acceptance method before starting a trial. Identify the product-package combination, approved settings and responsible equipment or quality owner. A test must have a clear question and a controlled disposition for trial material.
Compare the existing and proposed condition with identified samples using the same measurement basis. Change only what the responsible owner has authorised. Include the relevant steady-running, stop or restart case; one passing sample does not establish repeatable operation.
Keep results, samples and configuration revisions together. Record what passed, what remains open and the exact approved scope. If a correction moves the defect to another process step or compromises another acceptance requirement, retain that result and continue the assessment.
Common question
Can a wet bottle surface affect date-code performance?
Surface condition can matter for the selected marking method. Qualify the actual substrate and conditions with the coding supplier rather than assuming every technology responds the same way.
Technical reading
The linked manufacturer material provides engineering context. This worksheet is an independently written diagnostic framework; the installed equipment’s approved instructions and the site’s product acceptance determine the actual procedure and limits.
