Checkweigher Results vs Fill Volume: Density and Tare Review

Reconcile checkweigher mass with net-fill acceptance using packaging tare, density, temperature and dynamic/reference measurement evidence.

What to establish first

A checkweigher measures mass within its defined arrangement, while a filling requirement may be expressed as volume. Verify container tare, product density and measurement conditions before interpreting every mass deviation as a filler fault.

Three checks before a change

  1. Confirm gross or net measurement, container variability and the approved tare method. Compare the same package samples using an authorised reference method.
  2. Record product conditions and the basis used to relate mass and volume. Do not use one density value for every formulation or temperature without evidence.
  3. Review conveyor presentation and the inspection operating range with the supplier. Test accepted and challenge samples using the agreed measurement and rejection procedure.

Interpret the observed pattern

Observed patternNext review
Gross mass shifts with packaging lotCompare bottle, cap and label tare data before attributing the change to product quantity. The acceptance method must define how packaging variation is treated.
Reference and dynamic results disagreeRepeat an approved comparison on identified samples and check the dynamic operating basis. Do not alter filler targets to compensate an unresolved measurement disagreement.
Mass passes but volume is uncertainEstablish the approved temperature and density conversion, or the required direct method. Report the actual basis rather than treating gross mass as a volume certificate.

Evidence to record

Use these fields as a worksheet. Keep individual results and comparison samples; an overall average alone may hide the affected condition.

Record itemRequired evidence
Gross/net and tare methodIdentify the exact format, lot and document revision; attach a representative sample or record.
Product density basis and conditionsState the location, method, instrument and operating condition so a comparison can be repeated.
Reference samples and weighing methodLink the observation to an individual sample and a common timestamp; retain both normal and affected cases.
Presentation and rejection resultsRecord the approved assessment, action, verification result and responsible person; keep unresolved items visible.

Controlled trial and acceptance

Agree the observation, affected boundary and acceptance method before starting a trial. Identify the product-package combination, approved settings and responsible equipment or quality owner. A test must have a clear question and a controlled disposition for trial material.

Compare the existing and proposed condition with identified samples using the same measurement basis. Change only what the responsible owner has authorised. Include the relevant steady-running, stop or restart case; one passing sample does not establish repeatable operation.

Keep results, samples and configuration revisions together. Record what passed, what remains open and the exact approved scope. If a correction moves the defect to another process step or compromises another acceptance requirement, retain that result and continue the assessment.

Common question

Can equal bottle weights prove equal beverage volume?

Only after the container tare and product basis are addressed. Packaging variation or changing density can alter the interpretation of gross mass.

Technical reading

The linked manufacturer material provides engineering context. This worksheet is an independently written diagnostic framework; the installed equipment’s approved instructions and the site’s product acceptance determine the actual procedure and limits.
