Shrink Pack Holes or Loose Film: Material and Tunnel Checks
Investigate shrink-pack holes and loose packs separately using film lots, pack arrangement and actual sealing, tunnel and handling records.
What to establish first
Inspect the complete pack before, during and after shrinking. Film damage, an unsuitable material or application condition and pack handling can produce different failure patterns that should not be treated as one temperature problem.
Three checks before a change
- Compare film specification, thickness basis, lot, pack geometry and approved samples. Identify whether a hole is present before the tunnel.
- Review film placement, sealing and the recorded tunnel condition with the supplier’s procedure. Compare pack presentation and operating state.
- Assess cooled packs using the agreed appearance and handling tests. Retain failed examples and verify any supported change without hiding downstream damage.
Interpret the observed pattern
| Observed pattern | Next review |
|---|---|
| Holes recur at one pack location | Identify whether the defect begins before or during shrink processing. Compare actual package contact and supported film conditions with retained samples. |
| A whole pack remains loose | Review the pack arrangement, material and process basis together. Do not label every loose result insufficient heat without checking the approved combination. |
| Pack appearance passes but handling fails | Apply the agreed package-system test and preserve samples. An attractive pack at the tunnel exit does not establish the intended distribution performance. |
Evidence to record
Use these fields as a worksheet. Keep individual results and comparison samples; an overall average alone may hide the affected condition.
| Record item | Required evidence |
|---|---|
| Film specification and lot | Identify the exact format, lot and document revision; attach a representative sample or record. |
| Pack format and pre-tunnel condition | State the location, method, instrument and operating condition so a comparison can be repeated. |
| Sealing and tunnel state | Link the observation to an individual sample and a common timestamp; retain both normal and affected cases. |
| Cooled-pack assessment | Record the approved assessment, action, verification result and responsible person; keep unresolved items visible. |
Controlled trial and acceptance
Agree the observation, affected boundary and acceptance method before starting a trial. Identify the product-package combination, approved settings and responsible equipment or quality owner. A test must have a clear question and a controlled disposition for trial material.
Compare the existing and proposed condition with identified samples using the same measurement basis. Change only what the responsible owner has authorised. Include the relevant steady-running, stop or restart case; one passing sample does not establish repeatable operation.
Keep results, samples and configuration revisions together. Record what passed, what remains open and the exact approved scope. If a correction moves the defect to another process step or compromises another acceptance requirement, retain that result and continue the assessment.
Common question
Can one shrink setting be used for every film supplier?
Film and pack compatibility must be demonstrated under the intended conditions. Nominally similar film does not establish identical sealing or shrink behaviour.
Technical reading
The linked manufacturer material provides engineering context. This worksheet is an independently written diagnostic framework; the installed equipment’s approved instructions and the site’s product acceptance determine the actual procedure and limits.
