Carton or Tray Damage: Packing, Moisture and Stack Review
Review beverage carton or tray damage by first affected stage, board lot, pallet support, stacking and actual storage or transport conditions.
What to establish first
Locate damage across forming, loading, closing, palletizing and storage. Compare the actual board specification and conditioning with the pack and stack; a crushed carton is not automatically a case-packer fault.
Three checks before a change
- Record board construction, dimensions, lot, storage and moisture exposure. Compare the supplied material with the approved specification.
- Observe the first damage point using guarded operation. Review forming, loading and closing presentation with the machine owner.
- Assess the specified pallet pattern and handling conditions using agreed pack tests. Compare loaded, conditioned samples rather than only empty cartons.
Interpret the observed pattern
| Observed pattern | Next review |
|---|---|
| Damage exists at pack formation | Review board lot, forming and the actual product arrangement before shifting the investigation to transport. Retain the first affected pack. |
| Damage follows one pallet layer or edge | Map the location to support and stacking records. A location pattern is evidence for review, not proof of a single material cause. |
| Damage appears after storage or transport | Reconcile the actual environment and route with the validated package scope. Request an applicable package-system test rather than relying only on a single-carton report. |
Evidence to record
Use these fields as a worksheet. Keep individual results and comparison samples; an overall average alone may hide the affected condition.
| Record item | Required evidence |
|---|---|
| Board specification and conditioning | Identify the exact format, lot and document revision; attach a representative sample or record. |
| Pack load and dimensions | State the location, method, instrument and operating condition so a comparison can be repeated. |
| First damage stage | Link the observation to an individual sample and a common timestamp; retain both normal and affected cases. |
| Pallet and handling test results | Record the approved assessment, action, verification result and responsible person; keep unresolved items visible. |
Controlled trial and acceptance
Agree the observation, affected boundary and acceptance method before starting a trial. Identify the product-package combination, approved settings and responsible equipment or quality owner. A test must have a clear question and a controlled disposition for trial material.
Compare the existing and proposed condition with identified samples using the same measurement basis. Change only what the responsible owner has authorised. Include the relevant steady-running, stop or restart case; one passing sample does not establish repeatable operation.
Keep results, samples and configuration revisions together. Record what passed, what remains open and the exact approved scope. If a correction moves the defect to another process step or compromises another acceptance requirement, retain that result and continue the assessment.
Common question
Does a stronger-looking carton guarantee a stable loaded pallet?
Loaded-pack behaviour also depends on dimensions, pattern, conditioning and handling. Validate the actual pack and pallet arrangement.
Technical reading
The linked manufacturer material provides engineering context. This worksheet is an independently written diagnostic framework; the installed equipment’s approved instructions and the site’s product acceptance determine the actual procedure and limits.
