Bottle Shrink Wrapping Machine: Pack Speed and Formats
Size a bottle shrink wrapping machine in finished packs per minute for each bottle and pack pattern. Then confirm grouping, film handling, shrinking, cooling and discharge can keep up with the filling line under the agreed operating conditions.

Convert bottle speed to packer duty
Packer quotations commonly use packs per minute while filling lines use bottles per hour. Convert both to the same basis before comparing them. Required packs/minute = bottles/hour ÷ bottles/pack ÷ 60.
| Illustrative filler output | Pack pattern | Required pack output before operating margin |
|---|---|---|
| 12,000 bottles/hour | 6 bottles/pack | 33.3 packs/minute |
| 12,000 bottles/hour | 12 bottles/pack | 16.7 packs/minute |
| 12,000 bottles/hour | 24 bottles/pack | 8.3 packs/minute |
These are arithmetic examples, not machine performance specifications. The six-pack can be the more demanding packer-speed case even though it contains fewer bottles. Evaluate film changes, transfer stops and recovery separately; accumulation helps manage short disturbances but does not remove a sustained capacity shortage.
Choose film-only, pad or tray scope
| Format | Decision to make | What changes in the equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Film-only multipack | Will the bottle arrangement and film provide the handling performance required by the buyer? | Grouping, film width and thickness, cutting/wrapping and tunnel recipe. |
| Pad plus film | Is a bottom support needed for the chosen package and handling route? | Pad magazine, feeding and positioning, material storage and missing-pad checks. |
| Tray plus film | Does the distribution or retail pack require a formed tray? | Tray forming, blank specification, adhesive if used, magazine replenishment and pack conveying. |
| Printed film | Must artwork or a barcode appear in a controlled location? | Print registration, film feed control, artwork repeat and trial acceptance. |
| Carton alternative | Does the customer require carton protection or a different retail presentation? | A separate packing-method review with carton supply, forming, closing and handling scope. |
Confirm the exact row and column arrangement, bottle orientation, filled weight and finished pack dimensions. “Six-pack” alone does not describe the infeed lanes, collation or film requirement.
Allow for heat, cooling and pack handling
The tunnel specification should state electrical or other heating requirements, installed and operating loads, startup conditions and any required extraction. Check that the bottle, label, closure and beverage can tolerate the proposed process. A finished pack may need cooling before it can be handled or stacked as intended.
- Record infeed conveyor height, available lanes, bottle stability and accumulation before grouping.
- Confirm film storage, roll-change access, consumable supply and removal of scrap.
- Specify finished-pack cooling, turning, conveying and transfer to manual collection or palletizing.
- Check access for maintenance and safe operation alongside film, tray or pad replenishment.
- Coordinate machine interlocks and controlled restart after downstream congestion.
Accept the finished pack under its intended handling conditions
Run the most demanding confirmed combinations: smallest pack at the highest cycle rate, largest or heaviest pack, and any lightweight bottle or printed-film format. Record accepted packs rather than only the number entering the wrapper.
- Check bottle count and arrangement, film seal, holes, looseness, distortion and the stability of the finished pack.
- Verify that labels and codes remain readable and that bottle or closure deformation does not occur under the agreed process.
- Evaluate carrying, pallet arrangement and distribution tests agreed for the actual market; do not infer shipping performance from appearance alone.
- Time a film replacement and an agreed format change with clearly defined start and finish points.
- Return an itemized quotation for wrapper, tunnel, optional tray/pad module, conveyors, cooling, change parts and installation.
Frequently asked questions
How fast must the shrink wrapper run for 12,000 BPH?
A six-bottle pack requires 33.3 packs per minute before allowances for operating losses. A twelve-bottle pack requires 16.7. Confirm the required accepted output and recovery plan for each format.
Can one machine produce 6, 12 and 24 packs?
That depends on its collation, film width, tunnel, discharge and change-parts range. Require a format-by-format compatibility and output matrix.
Is printed film interchangeable with plain film?
Do not assume so. Printed film may need registration control and an approved print-repeat and winding specification. Test the intended material and artwork.
Prepare your equipment scope
Send the approved product and package information, required accepted output, factory conditions, destination and purchasing timeline. Mark provisional specifications clearly so that the quotation can identify assumptions and alternatives.
