Hot-Fill Bottle Panel Collapse: Package and Process Review
Investigate hot-fill bottle collapse using packaging lots, closure evidence and filling-to-cooling records, then verify the approved combination.
What to establish first
Bottle deformation needs a package-and-process investigation. Compare the qualified bottle, actual fill and cooling conditions, closure timing and handling; apparent panel collapse alone does not identify one machine fault.
Three checks before a change
- Compare the affected bottle and closure with the approved drawings and trial samples. Track supplier lot, material and format changes.
- Record the filling, closing and cooling history using the approved measurement locations. Compare the observed sequence with the qualified package/process window.
- Separate deformation during transfer from deformation after cooling. Retain samples and review the pattern with packaging and process specialists before changing the recipe.
Interpret the observed pattern
| Observed pattern | Next review |
|---|---|
| Collapse follows one packaging lot | Compare the documented bottle and closure combination with a retained accepted lot. The lot association identifies a comparison to investigate, not an automatic supplier-fault finding. |
| Collapse follows a process transition | Reconcile filling, closing and cooling records with the first affected samples. Product-process acceptance remains a separate obligation from appearance. |
| Appearance improves in a trial | Check closure, bottle function and the agreed storage-stage samples before approval. State the exact combination and operating scope; do not extrapolate to every hot-fill product. |
Evidence to record
Use these fields as a worksheet. Keep individual results and comparison samples; an overall average alone may hide the affected condition.
| Record item | Required evidence |
|---|---|
| Bottle and closure specification | Identify the exact format, lot and document revision; attach a representative sample or record. |
| Material lot and approved sample | State the location, method, instrument and operating condition so a comparison can be repeated. |
| Fill-close-cool history | Link the observation to an individual sample and a common timestamp; retain both normal and affected cases. |
| Location and timing of deformation | Record the approved assessment, action, verification result and responsible person; keep unresolved items visible. |
Controlled trial and acceptance
Agree the observation, affected boundary and acceptance method before starting a trial. Identify the product-package combination, approved settings and responsible equipment or quality owner. A test must have a clear question and a controlled disposition for trial material.
Compare the existing and proposed condition with identified samples using the same measurement basis. Change only what the responsible owner has authorised. Include the relevant steady-running, stop or restart case; one passing sample does not establish repeatable operation.
Keep results, samples and configuration revisions together. Record what passed, what remains open and the exact approved scope. If a correction moves the defect to another process step or compromises another acceptance requirement, retain that result and continue the assessment.
Common question
Can any PET bottle be used for the same hot-fill process?
Package suitability must be demonstrated for the defined process. Similar capacity or shape does not establish the same thermal and pressure behaviour.
Technical reading
The linked manufacturer material provides engineering context. This worksheet is an independently written diagnostic framework; the installed equipment’s approved instructions and the site’s product acceptance determine the actual procedure and limits.
