Heat Exchanger Pressure Drop Rise: Operating-Basis Review
Review heat-exchanger pressure drop at comparable flow and product conditions alongside thermal performance and cleaning history.
What to establish first
Compare pressure drop at consistent product and flow conditions before concluding that a heat exchanger is fouled. Measurement, product viscosity, flow changes and circuit restrictions can affect the result.
Three checks before a change
- Confirm pressure points, calibration, product condition and flow. Compare the same exchanger boundary and operating period with the agreed baseline.
- Trend pressure drop and thermal performance alongside production and cleaning history. Identify changes in formulation, circuit state or measurement.
- Ask the supplier to assess inspection or cleaning needs through the approved method. Verify any response with both hydraulic and process-performance evidence.
Interpret the observed pattern
| Observed pattern | Next review |
|---|---|
| Product or flow changed with pressure drop | Reconcile viscosity/condition and flow at the same boundary. Compare equivalent operating cases before diagnosing deposits. |
| Hydraulic and thermal trends deteriorate | Review the accepted baseline and production/cleaning history with the supplier. The combined evidence defines an assessment; it does not authorise a generic cleaning recipe. |
| Pressure drop improves after cleaning | Recheck thermal/process performance and quality acceptance too. Record the actual approved method, conditions and residual issues. |
Evidence to record
Use these fields as a worksheet. Keep individual results and comparison samples; an overall average alone may hide the affected condition.
| Record item | Required evidence |
|---|---|
| Pressure points and flow basis | Identify the exact format, lot and document revision; attach a representative sample or record. |
| Product and thermal conditions | State the location, method, instrument and operating condition so a comparison can be repeated. |
| Production and cleaning trends | Link the observation to an individual sample and a common timestamp; retain both normal and affected cases. |
| Supplier response and verification | Record the approved assessment, action, verification result and responsible person; keep unresolved items visible. |
Controlled trial and acceptance
Agree the observation, affected boundary and acceptance method before starting a trial. Identify the product-package combination, approved settings and responsible equipment or quality owner. A test must have a clear question and a controlled disposition for trial material.
Compare the existing and proposed condition with identified samples using the same measurement basis. Change only what the responsible owner has authorised. Include the relevant steady-running, stop or restart case; one passing sample does not establish repeatable operation.
Keep results, samples and configuration revisions together. Record what passed, what remains open and the exact approved scope. If a correction moves the defect to another process step or compromises another acceptance requirement, retain that result and continue the assessment.
Common question
Does higher pressure drop automatically mean a blocked plate pack?
First compare the operating and measurement basis. Flow, product properties or another restriction can require a different investigation.
Technical reading
The linked manufacturer material provides engineering context. This worksheet is an independently written diagnostic framework; the installed equipment’s approved instructions and the site’s product acceptance determine the actual procedure and limits.
